I am not a PC…

So here it is.  I bought a MacBook.  After literally 10+ years of being a “Dell Guy”, well Dell finally ran out of laptops that I found interesting.

My last notebook, the Adamo13 was one of my favorites.  Ultra slim, solid state just about everything.  Could do a 5 hour plane-ride without issue.

But I needed something else.  After flipping back and forth between Linux and Windows I realized I needed something that could go both ways.  The more I thought about it, Apple seemed like the way to go.  Apple runs on a BSD Linux kernel after all, has a linux command-line (if you know where to get to it) and pretty good compatibility.

So when I finally got it in my head to upgrade, well I went ahead and dropped the hammer on a 15″ macbook pro.  (so to speak)

So far I’m pretty happy with my choice.  But when the first person at work saw me on it and asked me the idiot question I got pissy.

“Are you a Mac now?”

No idiot, I’m a person.  I’m *USING* a Mac.

Let me break it down.  I have in my arsenal the following systems.

In my household and business I have:

3 Desktop PC’s running windows 7
3 Laptops running Windows 7
4 VMWare ESXi hosts containing the following:

11 Windows 2008 Servers
2 Windows 2003 Servers
10 CentOS 5 Servers
5 CentOS 6 Servers
2 SUSE Enterprise 11 Linux
1 Mac

This is the thing.  I’m a technology pragmatist.  I use what works best and does what I need it to.  In the limited scope of a transportable computer, a Mac seems to do what I need nicely, and yes, it comes in an attractive and (so far) fairly durable package.

But I’m not a Mac.  Nor am I a PC.  I’m a person who uses a computer.  (Several actually)

Religion has no place in technology.  Leave it in the church.

Oh, and I’m still not buying a #$!@!? iPhone.

  • Wow! For someone who REALLY dislikes Apple I am surprised!

    • I dislike Apple because they could create tens of thousands of jobs in the US by bringing their manufacturing home… Sadly, that’s true of almost all computer manufacturers these days so I can’t afford to let it be a disqualifying factor. And I still do. I bought a remaindered 2010 Macbook, and did *NOT* buy it directly from Apple, though I’m sure the wholesaler I bought it from did. I did NOT buy the stupid extended warranty (which is just an excuse for manufacturers to charge people who can’t replace a harddrive an extra $400) and i will probably never *EVER* set foot in an Apple Store.

What I fail to understand is why people now expect me to replace all of my OTHER systems with Apple. The MacBook seems to be a good travel PC. (Under the covers after all, it is still just an Intel based PC with a highly customized OS on it)

No – my desktop does things that a Mac could *NEVER* do, well for under $10k that is.

See I can put a pair of NVidia 580 series network cards and have a SCREAMING gaming system for under $1000. I can get 90% of the software I need to work for cheap or free though the open source market, and most of it is actually BETTER than purchased software. (Anyone who uses GIMP for image manipulation can tell you that)

And oh, Apple doesn’t make a server of any kind anymore. They totally failed at it.

It’s a tool. Not a religion. I don’t see people walking up to construction workers saying “Are you a DeWalt or a Black&Decker”?

    • jesus, that was almost a separate post.
